The world community of architects has lost a symbolic figure, an immense creator, a man of action, a man of heart.
Oscar Niemeyer passed away yesterday, in Rio. He was in his 104th year. Messages of homage to this acknowledged master of modern architecture are flowing in from all over the world. The International Union of Architects would like to salute his enormous contribution to the architectural and urban heritage of the XX century but also his commitment to the city, to justice and solidarity. On behalf of the International Union of Architects, I should like to address my most sincere condolences to his family and friends, to the Brazilian Institute of Architects and fellow architects in Brazil and throughout the world, on the occasion of this loss that affects us profoundly.
