UIA Communiqué - 11 JULY 2012
In the name of the worldwide community of architects, the UIA expresses its consternation,
indignation and incomprehension faced with the destruction of sacred edifices in Timbuktu, Mali, registered in 1988 on the UNESCO World Heritage List, and on the List of World Heritage in Danger, on 28 June 2012, at the meeting of the World Heritage Committee in Saint-Petersburg. The International Union of Architects declares its full support of the action taken by UNESCO, the World Heritage Committee and ICOMOS in favour of the protection of Timbuktu. The UIA associates itself with the call made by Mrs. Irina Bokova, UNESCO General-Director, entreating “all parties engaged in the conflict to stop these terrible and irreversible acts, to exercise their responsibility and protect this invaluable cultural heritage for future generations”.
